Imagine a hidden paradise in the heart of the French countryside, where life is filled with simple pleasures: delicious food, fine wines and a secluded garden full of sunshine. Welcome to French Farmhouse Holidays, a venture of two young Canadian musicians, Caitlin MacRae and Marianne de Kleer. These two young women are better known as part of the acclaimed vocal chamber ensemble, musica intima. France is another of their passions and a few years ago they bought an old farmhouse in the Auvergne. The farmhouse is located in the picturesque village of St Privat du Dragon in the Auvergne region of central France. This tiny village is nestled in a charming valley, where the old stone houses bask in the summer sun. This is the southern reach of the Auvergne, a secluded region in the heart of France. It is a lush, rural region, sparsely populated and generally unfrequented by the scores of tourists who attack Provence and the Côte d’Azur. But the Auvergne has all of the charm of the more popular regions of France, and indeed has an authentic feeling often missing in other areas awash in a sea of foreigners. St Privat du Dragon has been the setting for Marianne and Caitlin’s summer holiday workshops and is now a destination for rental guests who are looking for a vacation in France, complete with old stone houses, bright sunny gardens, simple culinary pleasures of wine, cheese and fresh produce, and most of all, a pace of life that allows for dreaming, relaxing and reconnecting with oneself and with others. Life at the farmhouse flows with the rhythm of the days, eddies around meals, and pools deep and clear during late-night conversations under the brilliant stars. It’s a place to think and breathe.
